In an era where contemporary software - not only for research and development - is free and developed as open source, the distribution of it has become a surprisingly complicated technical problem. Likewise, it can be an insurmountable obstacle for a user - without sufficient and broad background knowledge - to make this actually freely available software run on one's own device without help from third parties. The ongoing trend towards ever larger quantities of processed data, requiring ever more complex software, amplifies this effect. We concern ourselves with a specific, exemplary use case of this very problem: Open source geo-information systems (GIS). Today, the "QGIS" software application is probably the most widely used open source GIS software with a graphical user interface (GUI). QGIS can deal with small to medium amounts of data excellently. Its setup is relatively easy and achievable without additional background knowledge. However, limits are reach pretty soon if QGIS is for instance supposed to be extended with additional components for handling larger quantities of remote sensing data, which are rather common today. A number of obvious questions arise. Where is GIS relevant in modern day life? What do the terms software deployment and packaging mean? How does one define "larger quantities of data" nowadays? Where does one get this data, satellite imagery, for free, and what can one discover in them?
